How to Read a Dash Cam Spec Sheet Without Being Fooled

Two dash cam listings can describe products of very different quality using almost identical language, because a handful of substitutions turn up again and again in this category. Each one replaces a specification that is hard to achieve with a related one that is easier, and the replacement is technically true. Learn the five and you can compare two listings on what they actually say rather than on how they read.

The five substitutions to watch for

Storage range quoted instead of operating range. A device may survive a temperature it cannot work at, and the survival figure is always the wider one. What you want is the range in which the camera records. A listing quoting a single temperature range without saying which it is has told you less than it appears to. Diagonal field of view quoted instead of horizontal. The diagonal figure is always the largest of the three ways it can be measured, and the horizontal figure is the one that determines whether you catch a car entering from a side road. Two cameras advertising the same number can differ noticeably if one is quoting diagonal and the other horizontal. Why this matters more than it sounds is in why wider is not better.

The front channel's specification presented as the product's. On most two-channel packages the rear unit is a smaller, lower-specification module. A headline resolution frequently describes the front alone, and the rear's own figure appears further down or not at all.

Interpolated resolution presented as native. Interpolation is upscaling in software. It produces a larger file with no additional detail, and it is not the same thing as a sensor that captured that resolution. Look for the sensor's native output rather than the recording resolution the camera offers.

Card capacity presented instead of card endurance. A listing recommending a large card is telling you what fits, not what survives continuous overwriting. Endurance rating is the specification that matters for a device that writes constantly, and it is a property of the card rather than the camera.

What silence tells you

An omitted specification is information, and it is usually the most reliable information in the listing.

A camera that publishes no operating temperature range has probably not been characterised for one. A listing that names no sensor is probably not proud of it. A product page with no mention of the power source is almost certainly a lithium cell, because supercapacitor is a selling point and gets said. A maker with no published firmware history has no firmware history.

None of that is proof, and none of it is dishonest on the seller's part. It is simply that specifications that flatter a product tend to be present, so the ones missing are worth asking about. That asymmetry is sharpest at the bottom of the market, which is the subject of what you actually give up under sixty dollars.

Specifications that carry real information

  • Operating temperature range, labelled as such, with both ends.

  • Native resolution and frame rate together. Resolution alone omits half the picture, and a high resolution at a low frame rate handles motion differently.
  • Horizontal field of view, labelled.
  • Per-channel specifications on multi-channel systems.
  • Supported card type, capacity and endurance recommendation.
  • Firmware version and update history, which tells you whether anyone is still looking after the product.

Specifications that carry none

  • "Night vision," "super night mode," "ultra clear." Undefined marketing language with no comparable meaning between brands.
  • "Professional grade," "cinema quality." Neither term means anything in this category.
  • A resolution figure with no frame rate and no sensor named.
  • Maximum card capacity presented as a feature. It describes what the camera will accept, not what it will do with it.
  • Sample footage in the listing, which is selected and often processed. Owner-filmed footage on video sites, in ordinary conditions, is far more informative.
  • Star ratings on the listing itself, as opposed to reviews of the app on its own store page, which are written by people who actually have to use it. That distinction matters more than it sounds, as we argue in the app is half the product.

A reading order for two listings

  1. Power source. If one is supercapacitor and the other lithium and you park outside, you may be finished already.
  2. Operating temperature range, labelled, both ends.
  3. Per-channel specifications, if it is a multi-channel system.
  4. Sensor and native resolution with frame rate.
  5. Horizontal field of view.
  6. Card requirements, and whether the maker says anything about endurance.
  7. App and firmware support history.
  8. Everything else, which is preference.
